TUNGSO

Tungso is a musical instrument that makes sounds by blowing, that its body is pierced from top to bottom. Tungso is known to have brought from China during the Goryeo Dynasty and used it a lot for Dangak and during Joseon Dynasty played Dangak together with Banghyang, Juk, Bipa, Daejaeng, Ajaeng, Piri, Gyubangyu, and Jang-gu. Tungso is made with Hwangjuk, thick and big, has 5 Jigong with Chilseong-gong at the bottom, and Cheonggong.
Tungso of the Goryeo Dynasty usually used for Yeonrhaeak and has 6 Jigong. Since it does not have Cheonggong, it made clean and neat sounds. However, starting from the Joseon Dynasty, Tungso started to have Cheonggong, with one Jigong at the back and 4 in front. Usually, Folk songs or Cinawi played by Tungso.


Similar to Danso, Tungso’s technique is to block the upper hole with the left hand and the lower hole with the right hand. They also block the hole with the second joint of the fingers to change notes. And by turning their heads to draw circles or waving left and right while playing.
