TAEPYUNGSO

Taepyongso is one of the winds instruments that has the meaning of “the desire for the world to be more comfortable” and also called as Saenab, Hojeok, or Hoga. This was used in Jaerhaeak or Yenrhaeak, and since it has big and strong sounds, it was used in the military.
The body of the Taepyeongso is made of hard trees such as Xylosma congestum (shiny xylosma), Chinese/Japanese plum tree, Jujube tree, mulberry tree, and willow tree. This instrument is narrow and getting thicker towards the top. Also, it has a separate end part of the instruments, which is usually made of copper. Since Chigu is made of metal by copper, when they play they put small stick made of reed (Seo) and blow it also, it has a small body but depends on how player plays with its hands, it can make sounds of high, clean and clear sounds.

Taepyeongso has eight holes but using seven holes to play using one’s fingers by open or close it. It plays like Piri, holds vertically, and opens and closes its holes. While playing Taepyeongso, the player needs to put Seo inside the mouth and put air inside by blowing the air hard (until the cheeks become big) more air the louder and the higher sounds. Also, the instruments need to be parallel with the face then by moving lips and fingers little by little makes sounds.
