DAEGEUM

Daegeum is a musical instrument that makes sounds by blowing, and also called “jeo”, “jeotda”, “jeodae”. It is one of the three representative wind instruments (Daegeum, Junggeum, Sogeum) during the Unified Silla Dynasty. Daegeum has mellow tones and easy to control pitch that has many songs play alone. Also, since it matches well with other instruments, it can play with many different instruments and makes quiet and soft sounds. There are two kinds of Daegeum – Jangak Daegeum and Sanjo Daegeum. Jangak Daegeum dominated by gentle Yangban (noble) while Sanjo Daegeum is longer than Jangak Daegum but usually enjoyed by the public freely.

Daegeum usually used Hwangjuk (thickest and most upright among bamboo trees) or Ssangoljuk (deeply dug). Also, it has six holes with Chilsung-gong, end part of the instrument. Daegeumhas a hole in between Jigong to make vibration sounds. Also, Daegeum has a thin film in a reed that easily tears out, so it usually puts a cover. The player plays this instrument, similar to the flute, a Western musical instrument, it is lifted to the side so that the Chigu looks up, and hold parallel to the floor so that it might have a good sound.
