DANSO

단소.JPG

Danso is an instrument under winds/Pipe. Danso does not have any records even in Akhakgyebum. Still, it can be found its origin from the Paleolithic Period (Old Stone Age) since it started from the empty pipe. Also, Danso appeared in Oral lyrics such as Pansori or Jae (similar to Exorcism), people were assuming it used from around 100 years. It was not shaped as it is known right now but similar with Yanggeum, but later developed into six-holed bamboo flute. Danso is one of the most commonly used instruments in school when they are teaching Gugakgi (Korean Traditional Instruments).

Danso used Hwangjuk or Ojuk, which considered the best when it has hollow on both sides of the bamboo. Danso has a total of five Jigong (front: 4, back: 1) and has a hold called Chigu, half-moon shape at the upper end where the player blows their breath inside to make a sound. Recently, it is also made with plastic to help people to make their sounds easier but mostly made of bamboo since it has more deep tones.

It has pure and clean sounds which also make high pitch sounds and trivial sounds freely. This fact makes Danso to have a smooth accompaniment for reciting Shijo (three-verse (stanza) Korean Poem) or singing lyrics. Also, scholars used this instrument when they were playing some string instruments. However, unlike other wind instruments including western instruments, it does not have a sound technique which is called “Tonguing.” This is because unlike other western flutes which are cylinical pipe but Danso has Conical Pipe.
